Spectacular Vernacular at Brooks Stevens Gallery (Exhibitions)

Overview
Our 2016 solo exhibition Spectacular Vernacular moved to its second venue, the Brooks Stevens Gallery at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2018. Adapted to the individual room layout of the gallery, each discrete project was presented on a series of islands detailing the first five years of our collaborative practice through the themes of observation, experimentation and speculation.
The exhibition’s introductory text panel read:
Besides being useful, and perhaps even beautiful, what else should designed objects do? Spectacular Vernacular takes you on a journey through observation, experimentation and speculation to reveal how the creators mix their craft and industrial design backgrounds with influences from fiction, science and the arts. Explore the rhetorical and practical opportunities of designed objects, encouraging a broadening of the conventional definition of the designer’s role.
Monica Obniski former Demmer Curator of 20th and 21st Century Design of the Milwaukee Art Museum moderated a panel discussion about our practice and the work on show at the exhibition on November 27 2018.
